2010 Short Story & Visual Arts Competition
Stories Handed Down

This year, Friends of the Antigua Public Library - New York, INC will present its 5th annual Short Story & Visual Arts Competition. 

Winners will be announced on Youth Day, Friday, November 5, 2010 at the Halcyon Rex Resort, St. John's, Antigua.



The competition is open to Antiguan and Barbudan students enrolled in Forms 1 through 5. The submissions must be your original work. No plagiarism please!

The competition rules are as follows:
  • You must have a valid Antigua Public Library Card.
  • Submissions must be made online by clicking "Upload Story" on this page.
  • All entries must be original and unpublished.
  • Entries must be received no later than October 22, 2010.

Rules & Guidelines                               Short Story Competition

For centuries, Antiguans & Barbudans have handed down stories chronicling events, folklore, family history, tall tales and more.  Friends Of The Antigua Public Library - NY, Inc., in conjunction with the Antigua Public Library has commenced a five-year project to collect the stories of Antiguans and Barbudans at home and throughout the Diaspora.

For this competition, please interview an elderly Antiguan or Barbuda about "old time" days in Antigua and Barbuda, and submit a story based on your interview.  Your interview may focus on any particular topic, including church life, village life, family, school days, colorful characters, historical events, etc.  Please include the interviewee's name for attribution.

Your story should …
1.    Have a word limit from 850 to 1,000 words. Entries outside the word limitation will be disregarded.
2.    Stories must:
  • be typewritten. Absolutely no handwritten entries!
  • be numbered on each page.
  • be double spaced.
  • have margins set at least 1" all around with plain fonts. Preferred are Courier and Times (or Times New Roman).
  • exclude Illustrations. Text only, please.

Visual Arts Competition
Visual arts for the purpose of this competition include creations made through drawings (illustrations); and/or painting;.
1. You may submit your art with dimensions not exceeding 8-1/2 x 11;
2. Use of copyrighted material is not acceptable in any submission;
3. You may submit more than one piece of work.

Competition Dates
Competition starts September 1, 2010 through October 22, 2010.
Winners will be announced on Friday, November 5, 2010 at the Antigua & Barbuda International Literary Festival at the Halcyon Rex Resort.

Submission Format
Your work must be submitted in the following format:
  • Submit your Stories (.doc; docx; or .pdf format) or your Visual Art (jpeg format) by clicking "Upload Stories".
  • If you do not have access to a computer, please complete the Official Entry Form at the Antigua Public Library, and seek the assistance of a librarian for on-line submission.
